Ukrainian attacks on holiday camps in partly Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia kill 11

Renewed fighting between Russia and Ukraine claimed lives on both sides over the weekend, as officials in Russian-controlled territory and Ukraine reported deadly strikes that underscored the continuing intensity of the war.

Authorities installed by Moscow in the partially occupied Zaporizhzhia region said Ukrainian attacks on holiday resorts killed 11 people, including four children, and injured 16 others. The claims could not be independently verified, and Ukrainian officials did not immediately respond to the allegations.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, local authorities said a Russian drone strike struck a civilian facility, sparking a large fire that killed three people. Regional governor Oleh Hryhorov identified the victims as drivers employed by the private postal and courier company Nova Poshta.

Russia’s Defense Ministry, however, stated that its forces had targeted a site used to store and launch Ukrainian drones in the Sumy region, presenting a different account of the operation.

Continued Drone and Missile Attacks

In southeastern Ukraine, officials reported that a Russian drone attack late Friday hit a shopping center in Zaporizhzhia, triggering a fire that spread across roughly 500 square meters and leaving several people injured.

On Friday evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that intelligence assessments suggested Russia was preparing another large-scale missile assault. He said there were indications that such an attack could take place within the following 48 hours.

Ukraine also continued its long-range strikes inside Russian territory. Regional authorities in western Siberia confirmed that a Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire within the grounds of the Tyumen Oil Refinery.

Later, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had also successfully struck a logistics center in Yekaterinburg and a fuel and lubricant storage facility in Rostov-on-Don.

Over the course of the war, Ukraine has significantly expanded its long-range drone capabilities, allowing it to target military and energy infrastructure deep inside Russia. Repeated attacks on oil refineries and fuel facilities have disrupted supplies and increased pressure on the Russian government.

Possible High-Level U.S.-Ukraine Meeting

According to a White House official speaking anonymously, U.S. President Donald Trump and President Zelenskyy are expected to meet in Washington on Tuesday. The schedule had not yet been officially announced.

Ukrainian officials did not immediately confirm the meeting. However, Zelenskyy stated in his Friday address that preparations were underway for discussions with the President of the United States and members of his administration.

The reported meeting is expected to coincide with a memorial service in Washington honoring the late Senator Lindsey Graham, who had been one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters in the U.S. Congress.

Romanian Air Defenses Respond to Drone Incursions

Romania's Ministry of Defense announced that its military safely intercepted and destroyed a drone that entered Romanian airspace near the country's border with Ukraine. Officials said the drone was shot down over an uninhabited area by a Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jet.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan confirmed the interception in a statement, emphasizing that the operation was carried out without injuries or damage on the ground.

The incident occurred just one day after Romanian forces intercepted another drone near the town of Padina, northeast of Bucharest.

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, several drones from both sides have crossed into the territory of Romania and other NATO member states, raising regional security concerns.

Earlier this year, a Ukrainian maritime drone exploded at the Black Sea port of Constanța, while three additional sea drones detonated outside the harbor without causing casualties.

In another incident in May, a Russian drone participating in an attack on Ukraine veered off course and struck an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two residents.

The latest cross-border incidents highlight the growing challenges neighboring NATO countries face as the conflict continues to spill beyond Ukraine’s borders, even if unintentionally.
